One of the few shining lights of this season has been the emergence of the young players. In the Europa League, two teenagers and a 20-year old scored in a win over Elfsborg, whilst Archie Gray has mostly performed expectations, despite playing out of position. Whilst not a youngster per se, the revival of Djed Spence has also been a big positive.
Another youngster that has been a huge bright spark has been Lucas Bergvall, who has really become a consistent part of the team in 2025 especially. His tenacity out of possession and braveness in possession has not gone unnoticed within the Spurs fanbase.
It was a real shame to see his first Premier League goal chalked off after a seriously lengthy VAR check on Sunday, what a brilliant moment that would have been. Nevertheless, he still made his 24th appearance in the league alone, totalling over 1000 minutes.
Owing to his performances in his first season at the club, reports out of Sweden are suggesting that Spurs are ready to reward the 19 year old with a new and improved contract, with a deal “in the works” according to Swedish outlet FotbollDirekt.
As it stands, Bergvall has a contract at Spurs until 2029, so there is certainly no rush to get a new one signed. However, you can never be too safe when it comes to such a talented player’s contract, and it would certainly do no harm to have his deal extended for another couple of years on top of that.
Considering some of the expensive dross Spurs have signed in recent years, the signing of Bergvall was some pick up, particularly for just £8.5m. It goes to show that there is some serious value in the lesser spotted markets, with Northern Europe certainly one that has shown very good value over the years.
Players like Bergvall are exactly whom the side should be build around in coming years. All being well, the likes of him and Gray could be in the side for a decade or more, and show they were worthwhile investments (with Gray costing a fair bit more). With academy grown talent such as Mikey Moore in there too, the future could look very bright in a few years time.
Let’s see. Certainly news out of the blue, but very welcome all the same.
