Following Michael Carrick’s departure, Middlesbrough’s search for a new head coach has inevitably sparked speculation across the Championship.

Carrick’s exit follows a disappointing end to a 24/25 campaign that promised much but delivered another finish that fell short of solid upward momentum in 10th place.

While no appointment is imminent, several names have surfaced - ranging from former assistants to current international managers.

Among those reportedly under consideration is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl. The 35-year-old German has attracted attention for guiding Wednesday to a mid-table finish despite inheriting a struggling squad.

According to reports, Rohl is admired by the Boro hierarchy, but his sizeable Owls release clause is currently seen as a major obstacle to any potential approach.

Football League World spoke with resident Owls expert Patrick McKenna on whether he’d see Danny Rohl as a natural fit for the Middlesbrough managerial job.

“I certainly can see Middlesbrough considering coming in for Danny Rohl but they may be put off by the inbound compensation fee and at this stage here, a part of me just wants this issue with Danny Rohl resolved,” McKenna told FLW.

“If he is to go, I just want to see him get a new club and go somewhere where he is happy and, in theory, we can then go on and look for a new manager.

“I could see him being a natural fit for Middlesbrough and kind of exactly what they need. Michael Carrick - he did do a good job at them but last season he could only take them so far and I think there was a bit of disappointment amongst the fanbase that they did fall a bit short and finish 10th.

“It seems, I believe, with the squad they had, they should have been pushing on to grab a play off spot, and if they did get Danny Rohl in I have every belief that they would get a play off spot.

“I think he would rejuvenate the squad, he would come in and put in a very clear, attacking purpose to the team and he would make you a sort of squad, and they’d become more fluid and clever in their approach and tactics.

Middlesbrough have shown faith previously in younger managers, an example is Carrick, as you said he was given money to spend, so if Danny Rohl is with a club on the edge of the play offs and he is backed, then I think we will see what I suppose all Wednesday fans were hoping to see last season - the club going on and pushing for the play offs.”

As Championship clubs continue to assess their options ahead of another fiercely competitive season, Danny Rohl’s reputation is clearly still on the rise.

Fulham, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Rangers are all believed to have explored appointing the 36 year old, alongside top flight Bundesliga sides.

While no formal move has been made, the combination of his tactical clarity, second-tier experience, and proven ability to stabilise and motivate a struggling side makes him an appealing candidate - particularly for clubs like Middlesbrough seeking a long-term project.

However, any club interested in Rohl will have to weigh the potential upside against the cost of triggering his release clause, which The Sheffield Star have reported to stand at £5 million.

For now, his future remains uncertain - but increasingly difficult for ambitious clubs to ignore.
