Gordon, 23, was the subject of interest from the Reds a couple of weeks ago as Newcastle’s profit and sustainability rules deadline loomed into focus.

The North East side were forced to consider the sale of star players ahead of June 30 in an effort to stave off punishments for the season upcoming.

However, thanks to the sales of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest, the Magpies were relieved to have kept hold of Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.

It was reported however that Newcastle had approached Liverpool to strike a deal for Gordon, which would have seen the ex-Everton winger return to the club he left as an 11-year-old.

Gordon's head turned

However, with Newcastle’s asking price proving to be too high and with the club’s insistence on inserting Jarell Quansah into the deal, the Reds walked away.

Nonetheless, it was then suggested through Newcastle sources that the club feared he’d had his ‘head turned’ by talk of the move with Eddie Howe’s side set for showdown talks when he returns after his summer break.

Gordon is with the England squad preparing for the Euro 2024 semi-final and the chat in and around the camp is that Gordon has ‘taken his eye off the ball’ amid transfer rumours.

That’s according to a report in the Daily Star, which also states that the player has got no chance of breaking into Gareth Southgate's team for the rest of the tournament.

Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka have been starters by and large with Eberechi Eze ahead of Gordon in the pecking order for changes out wide.

Liverpool could yet opt to come back in for a player who is out of contract in 2026, having moved to Newcastle from Goodison Park for £45 million in January 2023.
