Atlético de Madrid and Antoine Griezmann are on the brink of one of the most pivotal moments of their near decade-long relationship. According to Relevo reports, the Spanish club and French forward will sit down in March and determine 90% of the player's future. And all signs suggest his next step will take him out of Europe.
At 33, Griezmann seeks to end his European soccer days and start anew in MLS. His most likely destination? Los Angeles FC, a team already home to his fellow countrymen Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud. Negotiations are far advanced, and the sole step left is finalizing the formalities with Atlético de Madrid before bidding adieu in official style.
If true, this transfer would be one of the biggest in MLS in 2025.
Unlike the majority of transfers that are accompanied by acrimony or differences between clubs and players, Griezmann's potential departure from Atlético de Madrid is being handled with respect.
His connection to the club goes beyond soccer. He is among Atlético's all-time heroes in recent history, and his dedication has always been repaid. Even when he departed for Barcelona in 2019, he returned in 2021, settling in fast in the team and in the hearts of the fans. Now, with MLS on the horizon, Atlético de Madrid has no intention of standing in his way.
The club is well aware that the move is for family purposes, and therefore understandably the negotiations have to take place without any issues. A certainty is this: as long as Griezmann wears the red and white jersey, he will continue to give his best on the field.
In the recent years, MLS has become a top destination among European veteran footballers. It already has on its rolls players like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba with Inter Miami, amongst other superstars like Marco Reus.
Now, Los Angeles FC wants to be the next giant in this revolution. With Hugo Lloris in goal and Olivier Giroud on his way in, the signing of Griezmann would further strengthen the team and introduce a new dimension to their attack.
If Griezmann’s move to MLS goes through, the league will experience another major boost. Just as Messi’s signing significantly increased viewership and global interest, Griezmann’s arrival at LAFC could have a similar effect.
This would make MLS even more competitive, and Los Angeles FC would solidify itself as one of the most star-studded teams in American soccer. For fans, it would be another gigantic reason to support a league that keeps growing in international stature.
