Millwall have been charged by the FA after their supporters targeted Ben Chilwell with homophobic chants during their FA Cup fifth-round tie against Crystal Palace in March.

Chants of “Chelsea rent boy” were aimed at Chilwell by away fans at Selhurst Park.

Chilwell is on loan at Palace from Chelsea and played the full 90 minutes of the game.

A statement from the FA on Thursday said: “Millwall FC has been charged with misconduct in relation to crowd control following the FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace FC on March 1.

“It’s alleged that during the 5th and 20th minutes the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters) conduct themselves in an orderly fashion and don’t use words or behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting way with either express or implied reference to sexual orientation.”

Millwall have until Wednesday, April 16 to respond to the FA charge.

Fans also aimed chants of “let him die” towards Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta after he was injured following a flying kick to the head from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who was sent off early on as Millwall lost 3-1.

But the FA did not investigate those chants as they did not breach regulations.
