Manchester City have seen their initial bid for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders turned down, with sources confirming the Premier League champions are preparing a renewed approach for the Dutch international.
Reijnders, 26, has emerged as one of Serie A’s standout performers since joining Milan in 2023. His displays in both domestic and European competitions have not gone unnoticed at the Etihad, where City are actively exploring options to reinforce their midfield this summer.
The Premier League holders made a verbal offer believed to be worth €60 million (£50.4m), but Milan rejected it outright. The Rossoneri are holding firm on their valuation of around €90 million (£75.6m), a figure City have yet to match.
TEAMtalk understands Milan are open to parting ways with Reijnders in the right circumstances, but not at a discount. The player is tied to the club until 2030, strengthening their negotiating position.
Despite rejecting City’s opening proposal, Milan are aware of growing interest and remain in contact with the Premier League side. Sources have indicated that City are readying a second bid in the region of €70 million (£59m), though even this revised offer is expected to fall short of Milan’s valuation.
Stefano Pioli, who coached Reijnders at Milan, previously described him as “an exceptional boy” and “a total midfielder.” The sentiment has been echoed by Daniele Adani, who, speaking on Viva El Futbol, said: “I believe the best player at Milan is Reijnders, certainly in the recent phase, because he’s a player who plays in a two-man midfield but always gets himself into shooting positions.
“In my opinion, Reijnders is a player of a superior category, an extremely high level. He manages to combine quantity, quality, timing of support, presence, positioning, and he knows how to receive and orient his control. He’s truly a strong player within a system that still needs to find the right spacing and balance.”
Reijnders has played a central role in Milan’s campaign, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet. Across all competitions, he has featured in 52 matches, scoring 15 goals and supplying five assists.
In the 2023-24 season alone, the Netherlands international made 50 appearances, netting four times and providing four assists. His consistency, versatility, and vision have marked him as a player of interest to Europe’s elite.
While Milan’s valuation may appear steep, City’s continued interest suggests they see Reijnders as a long-term asset. With midfield reinforcements prioritised ahead of the new campaign, insiders expect at least one more bid to materialise.
Though Milan remain resolute, the negotiation process is ongoing. Should City increase their proposal closer to the €90m mark, the Rossoneri may be tempted to reconsider. For now, however, Milan are standing firm.
