Mike Maignan has had a rollercoaster of a season, like most of the Milan squad, alternating brilliant saves with inexplicable gaffes. It hasn’t helped his case while the extension talks are ongoing. The team has reportedly tweaked its proposal and asked for an answer one way or the other relatively soon, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The goalkeeper had asked to reach the Rafael Leao level initially when he was at the peak of his powers, around €6/7M annually, including add-ons. The opening request was repelled, and then he lowered it. While an agreement seemed close for a few months, it was never sealed or formalized.
The latest offer by Milan to Maignan envisages a €1M pay bump, from €3.5M to €4.5M per year, until either 2028 or 2029, potentially with a team option. The club wishes to end the impasse once and for all.
The front office is unlikely to sit down to negotiate the terms again. If the goalie and his camp refuse, he’ll be shopped in the summer as his present contract is up in 2026. Since he was signed for €13M a few years ago, his sale would guarantee a decent ‘plusvalenza.’
They are right in getting a move on, as they need to have clarity about him and Theo Hernandez before the summer window starts and they begin losing leverage. The numbers are fine for a quality goalie, but he could easily earn a lot more elsewhere, so a positive outcome isn’t guaranteed.
