Jon Dahl Tomasson has been in charge of the Swedish national team since February 2024, but could he be on his way to Middlesbrough in the near future?

The 48-year-old assumed the international role after quitting his job at Blackburn Rovers, with the club languishing 18th in the Championship, having gone two months without a league win - but it was more to do with a public spat with the club's owners the Venky's that led to his exit.

According to talkSPORT though, the Dane is on the list of Middlesbrough’s potential replacements for previous boss Michael Carrick, meaning he could return to English football in the near future.

When asked on the Boro links prior to Sweden's clash with Hungary this past weekend, Tomasson didn't exactly shut the door on a potential switch to Teesside, despite having the aim of getting the Scandinavian country to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Football League World’s Middlesbrough fan pundit, Phil Auton, isn’t sold on the prospect of Tomasson taking over at the Riverside this summer either, and would prefer for the club to look at other targets.

“I don't think we're going to end up getting somebody who's already in a job - unless someone like Danny Rohl could be appointed given Sheffield Wednesday’s financial issues," Phil told FLW.

“Jon Dahl Tomasson was probably dealt a bad hand with Blackburn. Rovers always start really well but they fade off quite a bit and I think with everything going on behind the scenes they overachieved under Tomasson.

“Personally, I think Tomasson would be a bit underwhelming, and I would prefer somebody else. I’m leaning more towards Sean Dyche now, given his experience. He can do it in the Premier League as well as the Championship.

“I think Rob Edwards is very similar to Carrick in the style of play, age and how he carries himself. Personally, I think Tomasson would be a little bit underwhelming.”

A Jon Dahl Tomasson gamble could prove worthwhile for Middlesbrough

Although the Sweden boss left Ewood Park in unfortunate circumstances, Tomasson’s first season managing in English football was a resounding success.

The 48-year-old battled for the play-offs throughout the 2022/23 Championship campaign and only missed out due to goal difference.

Tomasson had grown tired of Rovers’ shortcomings in the transfer market, especially after an administrative error saw a deal fall through for United States international Duncan McGuire.

Blackburn sold Adam Wharton to Crystal Palace for a club-record £22 million on deadline day of the 2024 January transfer window, but that money wasn’t reinvested back into the side.

Therefore, it could be argued that given a bigger budget and a more reliable recruitment team, Tomasson could achieve higher results than what he managed with Rovers.

Other more experienced managers have been linked with the role, but the Sweden manager’s potential is still yet to be fully explored in club management.

Opting for Tomasson could prove to be a risk, but one that could reward Boro handsomely.
