Carlo Ancelotti says Kylian Mbappe is feeling more motivated to help Real Madrid pull off a shock comeback against Arsenal following his red card against Alaves on Sunday.

Mbappe was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge in the first half of the game but Madrid still managed to win 1-0 thanks to a goal from Eduardo Camavinga.

The French striker struggled to have an impact in the 3-0 loss against Arsenal in the first leg but Ancelotti says he is desperate to right the wrongs of that loss and his recent red card.

“He was hurt by what happened last match,” Ancelotti said. “He’s now motivated. Obviously, we need him and his goals more than ever.”

Real Madrid have a history of coming from behind in the Champions League but have never come from three goals down to progress in a tie.

But ahead of the game, Mbappe’s team-mate Bellingham says there is an expectation around the club that they will pull off the unexpected and Ancelotti echoed his midfielder’s thoughts.

“We have the quality to turn this tie around, along with the commitment, the experience and the fans.

“The resources are there, and now it’s time to bring our best. Mentally we’re doing very well, and we have to have good control of the game.

“The Santiago Bernabeu has magic, and everyone knows it’s a special atmosphere.

“Tomorrow we need a bit of everything – quality and a complete performance, both physically and collectively. Not one of these things can go wrong.

“The motivation is there, and now I want the player to be calm before the game. I’m clear that we’re going to give it our all.

“The most important part for me is to have the control of the game.

“It’s about trying your best at the beginning to have that control and when you have that, you can score any minute.”
