Mauricio Pochettino’s surprise exit from Chelsea by mutual consent yesterday has meant that he is now in the frame for the Manchester United job and is keen on the prospect.

Due to a poor league season, where the Red Devils finished eighth and with a paltry goal difference of minus one, current manager Erik ten Hag’s job is very much under pressure.

INEOS are still reportedly weighing up a decision whether to sack the manager and it is said that United’s performance in the FA Cup final this Saturday could be crucial in their final choice.

As a result, Thomas Tuchel has been heavily linked to the United job after refusing to stay at Bayern Munich and is reportedly in “loose talks” with the Red Devils over taking the job in the summer.

However, the shock news arrived that Pochettino was leaving Chelsea after one season could cause managerial dominoes to fall all over Europe.

Despite starting the season slowly, Chelsea ended up finishing sixth, qualifying for Europe and unluckily losing in extra-time in the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool.

They also had an impressive ending to the season where they lost only once in their final 15 matches.

The Argentine was very much in the frame to become United manager in 2022 and had interviews with the club, before eventually losing out to Erik ten Hag.

Nonetheless, Pochettino commented at the time that he would be open to taking the job in the future and claimed in an interview with Radio MARCA via The MEN that “football is timing. These are the moments for it to coincide and for that marriage to happen. Sometimes it’s just a matter of time.”

“I don’t believe in trains passing only once. I think that sometimes you have to have the necessary patience and you have to know how to wait.”

The former Paris Saint-Germain manager also has a large ally in the United camp, Sir Alex Ferguson, who has a famous relationship with Pochettino ever since he became Southampton manager in 2013 and his side left a strong impression on the Scottish manager when they visited Old Trafford in January of that year.

TalkSPORT also added fuel to the fire late last night by stating that “Mauricio Pochettino would be keen on a move Manchester United” and would be “open to a swift return to the dugout.”

In what was already a fascinating and complex managerial situation at the club, the news that broke yesterday evening has certainly added a new dimension to the rumours.
