Match Report: Everton Women 0-1 Manchester United Women | OneFootball

Manchester United Women made it two wins from two to start the new Super League campaign.

After an impressive 3-0 win over West Ham United, Marc Skinner’s team followed up the result with a 1-0 away day victory against Everton.

United had 10 shots to the home side’s nine and edged possession with 53% of the ball.

The Red Devils got off to the perfect start when they opened the scoring after only four minutes of play.

After scoring last week, the PFA Young Player of the Year Grace Clinton cut out a lose ball in a dangerous area and powered forward, cutting inside before rifling the ball into the top corner of the Liverpudlians’ net.

Soon after, United found themselves in danger as Everton’s Karoline Olesen went one-on-one with Phallon Tullis-Joyce, but tbe United keeper made herself big and blocked the goal-bound effort before Maya Le Tissier cleared up the rebound.

With the departure of Mary Earps this summer, the American shot stopper has big gloves to fill, but two clean sheets in two is the perfect way to begin life as United’s new number one.

United’s talisman and Wembley hero, Ella Toone, has had a quieter start to the season than imagined, but almost got on the score sheet when her shot from just outside the box had to be well collected by the Toffees’ keeper Courtney Brosnan.

The hosts retorted with another long-range shot courtesy of Sara Holmgaard, but it didn’t trouble Tullis-Joyce, as it flew wide of the target.

As the second half began, Toone managed to dribble the ball into the box and picked out Dominique Janssen in lots of space. However the new signing took too long on the ball and Everton closed her down.

Nonetheless the ball broke to Millie Turner, who smashed a rasping effort straight at Brosnan.

Everton continued to press for an equaliser but the American Tullis-Joyce was equal to everything they threw at her.

Elisabeth Terland almost opened her account for the Red Devils after she made a good run down the left hand side, but her shot lacked power to threaten the Everton goal.

It was the former Brighton and Hove Albion striker’s replacement though, Melvine Malard, who came closest to adding to United’s tally as she headed a cross from Clinton just wide of the near post.

United held on for the win that saw them rise to second in the table, just behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Next up for the Red Devils is a huge home match against Liverpool in the first group game of the FA WSL Cup on Wednesday evening, where they will be looking to make it three wins from three to start the season.
