Manchester City dropped their first points of the Premier League season to last campaign’s title rivals Arsenal after a dramatic last-minute equaliser from John Stones.

Erling Haaland also scored his 100th Manchester City goal in just his 105th appearance for the club in a fierce game that now encapsulates the growing and ongoing rivalry between Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola.

The game between the two favourites to lift the Premier League trophy began in a rather thuggish and physical manner, with Kai Havertz lifting an elbow to Rodri, and Erling Haaland flying into William Saliba.

But amongst the tough feel of the game, Savinho showed technical skill to beat his man and play through Haaland, who poked the ball past David Raya to net his 100th City goal in his 105th game for the club – matching a record held by Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid.

City fans around the stadium thought for a moment that Ilkay Gundogan had doubled the lead with a free-kick travelling past the gloves of David Raya and crashing against the post. The noise from fans and intensity of the game created quite the atmosphere inside the Etihad.

Midway through the first half, Pep Guardiola was forced into making a change as Rodri picked up an injury and the effect of that change was felt just minutes later, as Arsenal found an equaliser through Riccardo Calafiori curling the ball past Ederson after a contentious free kick.

The visitors grew into the game and looked the more threatening side, taking the lead in the 45th minute after a towering header from Gabriel. The defender had missed his previous chance but Manchester City couldn’t stop the number six a second time.

Despite being behind, the reigning Premier League champions had something to be happy about going into the break, as Leandro Trossard received a second yellow card after a foul on Bernardo Silva and kicking the ball away.

City’s first chance of the second half came through Bernardo, who felt he should have done better with a half-volley inside the Arsenal penalty area. The ball fell to the Portuguese international after Haaland’s supernatural leap over William Saliba forced a save from Raya.

Groans rung around the Etihad Stadium from City fans as they watched the Blues pass the ball around Arsenal’s penalty area for the entirety of the second half with no real breakthrough, despite the additions of Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.

The Arsenal defence was limiting the Premier League champions to shots from range by the defenders as they stood firm in their penalty area, just waiting for the full-time whistle from Michael Oliver.

Ruben Dias had a shot in the 85th minute as the ball rolled to him on the edge of the box but his effort went high and wide and was met with a chorus of groans from the home supporters. Arteta’s side were using every part of their being to bring the full-time whistle closer with many players going down with cramps and David Raya holding the ball at every given chance.

Right at the death, City found an equaliser through the ‘Barnsley Beckenbauer’, John Stones. Mateo Kovacic’s deflected shot found the number five who stuck a foot out to get the equalising goal in the last minute of the game.

Pep Guardiola’s team will now need to rest ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with championship side Watford on Tuesday evening at the Etihad Stadium. But before then, here is how we assessed the individual performances of the entire Manchester City team.

Ederson – 5

Not very confident when coming for crosses which led to Arsenal’s second goal. Had little to do in the game.

Kyle Walker – 5

Potentially at fault for both of Arsenal’s goals but came forward in the second half after the sending off.

Ruben Dias – 6

Picked up a yellow card but dealt with Kai Havertz to stop him from breaking through.

Manuel Akanji – 6

Stopped the threat of Bukayo Saka and stepped into midfield during the second half.

Josko Gvardiol – 6

Pushed high up the pitch when in possession and created an overload in Arsenal’s third.

Ilkay Gundogan – 6.5

Tried to play quick and intricate passes through the tight lines of the defence. Had a chance early in the game which he couldn’t convert.

Rodri – 6

Played okay for 20 minutes but was unfortunate to pick up an injury so early on.

Bernardo Silva – 6.5

Very efficient in tight spaces and was always looking to create. Could have found an equaliser in the second half.

Jeremy Doku – 6

Not his most effective game in a City shirt and struggled against the low block.

Savinho – 7

His quick feet and dynamism created the first goal and he looked a threat every time he got the ball.

Erling Haaland – 6.5

Took his chance well to score his 100th City goal but had little impact on the game afterward.

Always tried to break the lines of the Arsenal defence and move past the defenders in the tight spaces.

Struggled to make an impact on the game with the tight Arsenal defence. Did not get on the ball as much as City fans would have wanted.
