Enzo Maresca has said Filip Jorgensen is now Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper.
Jorgensen started the Premier League win over West Ham two weeks ago, just his third league start of the campaign. The 22-year-old signed from Villarreal last summer but has spent the season as second-choice to date, featuring predominantly in cup competition.
However, Robert Sanchez’s poor form has persuaded Maresca to give Jorgensen a run of games. Sanchez has made five errors directly leading to goals in the Premier League this season, the joint-most in the division alongside Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Brighton tomorrow, Maresca confirmed that the shirt is Jorgensen’s to lose.
“I said that the Filip solution was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically. But the idea is not to game by game change the keeper,” the Italian said.
“In the last Premier League game we had Filip and in the FA Cup it was Robert. Our keeper at the moment is Filip.
“I spoke with Robert a few days before West Ham where I took the decision to play Filip. I never spoke again with Robert. Filip, exactly the same. They know the situation. This is the situation now and then we will see.”
Chelsea face Brighton for the second time in a week after exiting the FA Cup against the Seagulls last weekend. Maresca is anticipating another difficult test at the AMEX Stadium.
Asked whether it was ‘easier’ to face the same opponents in succession, he said: “(Yes) Because it’s fresh in your mind; the game, the way they attack and defend. It is never easy but we know what they do and try to do so it is probably better to face them again.
“I expect a similar one because it is not just against us, but in all the games they try to be aggressive. I expect a very similar game.”
