Newcastle United to sign Marcus Rashford, what do you reckon?

That is what an ‘EXCLUSIVE’ has now reported.

What do you think the chances are of Marcus Rashford lining up in black and white next season?

More to the point maybe, can you take a single word of this ‘EXCLUSIVE’ seriously…

The Sun ‘EXCLUSIVE’ report – 18 June 2025:

‘EXCLUSIVE – Newcastle United ready to offer Marcus Rashford perfect platform to reignite career and escape Manchester United woes

Unsettled England striker poised for new challenge ahead of World Cup Ian Tuckey, Digital sport journalist

NEWCASTLE want to rescue Marcus Rashford from his Manchester United limbo.

The Magpies are ready to offer the England striker Champions League football following his Aston Villa loan.

SunSport can reveal Newcastle are confident they can provide Rashford with an ideal stage to rebuild his career.

Toon boss Eddie Howe expects to keep £160million-rated Arsenal target Alexander Isak.

And far from being a replacement for the 25-year-old Swede, Newcastle see Rashford as an ideal player to rotate him with.

It’s understood the Magpies fancy a year-long loan deal for the 62-cap star.

But Old Trafford chiefs would prefer a permanent exit.

And any chance of Rashford slotting back in at United appear slim, even though he is under contract until 2028.

Rashford is keen on returning to a Champions League platform next term.

And ahead of their campaign in Europe’s top domestic cup competition, Newcastle need to strengthen up top.

So a swoop for a player of Rashford’s experience – not to mention his desperation to impress ahead of the World Cup – could suit both parties.’

When you have finished laughing, it is maybe worth going back a couple of years.

Back in 2023, Marcus Rashford had ran his contract right down, so Manchester United had to pay him what he wanted, or lose the player for nothing.

They went for the first option and agreed a new five year contract on reported wages of £325,000 per week (£17m per year).

Manchester United have regretted this decision ever since.

Marcus Rashford had scored 17 Premier League goals and got five assists in 2022/23, after the new mega contract that became seven Premier League goals and two assists in 2023/24, then four Premier League goals and one assist for Man U in the first half of 2024/25 as the Old Trafford club became ever worse in the league.

Aston Villa massively gambled in the January transfer window, trying to make sure of another Champions League qualification and dreaming of going as far as possible in the current (2024/25) competition, they went on a very extravagant loan signing spree. If it worked, great. If not, an awful lot of money burnt through on players who wouldn’t be assets.

Villa exited the competition in the quarter-finals and sadly (NOT!!!!) missed out on Champions League qualification, due ironically to a final day defeat to….Rashford’s Manchester United.

In January 2025, Aston Villa loaned Axel Disasi from Chelsea, Marco Asensio from PSG and Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. It was reported that only Disasi they had to pay a loan fee for, however, the wage bill for the three of these would have been shocking. Paid out for players who wouldn’t become assets of Villa, all three back at their clubs and this kind of huge triple loan gamble is part of the reason why Villa are in such PSR trouble this month, the gamble failed.

Disasi only started five Premier League games for Villa on loan, Asensio started nine, whilst Marcus Rashford started only four. Rashford was a lot more on the bench than starting and including the six times he came off the bench in league matches, the Man U loan player contributed only two Premier League goals and two PL assists.

With the ‘EXCLUSIVE’ above, I would look at it two ways…

Do you believe that ‘Ian Tuckey, Digital sport journalist at The Sun’ has any inside knowledge of what Newcastle United’s plans are in this summer transfer market, whether concerning Marcus Rashford or anybody else? No, me neither.

Then separate to that, do you think Newcastle United have any interest at all in signing Marcus Rashford?

If money was no object then who knows? However, this is the real world and Eddie Howe and Newcastle United have to use their spending capacity wisely.

Marcus Rashford is in the very expensive damaged goods department and needs another club. However, only very few clubs could/would take him on and Newcastle United aren’t amongst them.

It has become a thing where these players on massive wages head off on loan to other clubs. Raheem Sterling spent all last season on loan at Arsenal, he only started seven PL matches and scored zero Premier League goals all season and just two assists. Chelsea took Jadon Sancho on for a loan season and he only managed three goals and four assists in the 2024/25 PL season. As well as all the other cash they committed on the player, Chelsea then paid Man U an extra £5m so they weren’t obliged to sign him, as per their loan agreement!

Manchester United have dug themselves a very deep hole with Marcus Rashford and Newcastle United certainly won’t be the ones to help Man U drag themselves out of it.

They have a player who turns 28 in October and who they are obliged to pay £17m wages per year for, in each of the next three seasons.

The idea that even on loan, Eddie Howe and Newcastle United would pay somebody more than twice the wages of any current Newcastle player is laughable. Especially when there is no guarantee he will produce on the pitch these days. As Aston Villa found out last season when deciding he would be on the bench most often, can you imagine Newcastle United paying out the kind of loan deal finances on Marcus Rashford and then him keeping the bench warm?

Of course, we all know that this is all nonsense and the ‘EXCLUSIVE’ makes no sense on any level. Including the fact that needing a right footed attacking player to turn out on the left wing, isn’t exactly a priority, when Gordon and Barnes are at NUFC already.
