Manchester United women’s boss Marc Skinner has apologised to supporters after he and his players were handed a humiliating 6-0 by Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday on the final day of the WSL campaign.

The win effectively handed Chelsea the title – their fifth consecutive crown in a row.

United were brought back to reality in rude fashion following last week’s FA Cup final triumph against Tottenham Hotspur.

A Mayra Ramirez double and goals from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Sjoeke Nusken, Melanie Leupolz and Fran Kirby were enough to put United to the sword.

The Reds have ended their campaign in fifth position, six points adrift of Liverpool in fourth and 20 points behind champions Chelsea.

Skinner, who recently put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension with an option for extending by a further 12 months, spoke to the media after the match and reacted to the disappointing defeat.

He thanked the fans for their support before saying sorry for how the team performed. “We love them. We’ve not produced for them today and we wanted to. We’ve produced the first trophy of what we hope is many in the future. Even their voices at the end, they’re there.”

“Real supporters support the team forever and we have real supporters. I am sorry for today but we love them. I’ll make sure I die trying to deliver trophies for them for many years to come.”

On the gap between United and Chelsea, Skinner said, “No, I don’t think it [the result] reflects the gap. I think it reflects the gap in the game, for sure, but apart from that; the counter-attacks were aggressive. They were physical. We knew that was going to happen. And then you get hurt on that.”

“So you’ve got to defend those physicalities. But yeah, I mean, apart from that, I don’t think that we’re a six-nil away from Chelsea. I don’t think that at all. But we do need to continue to develop the depth of our squad in order to compete.”

He added, “It feels like [the lowest moment] in the moment, right, but I think it’s part and parcel of a team that are trying to develop. We’re unfolding in front of your eyes. We have to grow, and we have to try things where you have to recruit more players, and you have to continue to grow so quickly, that where do you get your consistency?”

“Over the past few years, we’ve had to keep evolving the squad, and we’ve got to get to a point where that is minimal, I think, minimal disruption.”

The 41-year-old gave an update on Leah Galton, who sustained an injury during the FA Cup final win last week.

Skinner said that Galton will be out for a few months but considering the nature of the setback, the outcome appears more positive than would normally be the case.

The United women’s boss predicted that the 29-year-old midfielder may miss pre-season but she’ll be back in time by the start of the new WSL campaign.
