Skinner has suffered a turbulent league season in charge of the Women’s team after losing some key players last summer.

However, the campaign has ended with silverware after Skinner guided the team to their first ever FA Cup success.

The impressive 4-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last weekend was a huge achievement for the team who knocked out Emma Hayes Chelsea in the semi’s to reach the showpiece occasion.

A cracker from Ella Toone was followed by a Rachel Williams header and a Lucia Garcia double as United strolled to success in the national stadium.

Skinner joined United in their third year in the Women’s Super League, finishing fourth in the 2021/22 season.

The next year saw Skinner led United to a title charge before ultimately coming up just short.

However, United did secure a fine second place finish, qualifying for the Champions League for the first time and reaching the FA Cup final.

Skinner describes it as “an honour” to extend his stay in Manchester and hopes to lead the team to further glory during his stay.

“I’ve always felt at home here, with our excellent players, staff, and fans. Being able to secure the team’s first major trophy at Wembley was a real career highlight for me and another sign of our continued growth, on and off the field.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me on this journey, and I look forward to creating many more winning memories together,” he said.

Interim head of women’s football at the club Matt Johnson also spoke on the news and says he is “delighted” to see Skinner continue his good work.

“Everyone at Manchester United is delighted to see Marc continue as women’s team head coach and build on the success of the team’s historic FA Cup win.

“Congratulations to Marc on his contract extension and we all wish him and the team the best of luck going into the new season,” said Johnson.

United Women’s end their campaign with the visit of title-chasing Chelsea who know a victory will be enough to secure a fifth consecutive Women’s Super League crown.

A win for United will leave them needing Liverpool to lose in order to finish fourth but otherwise, Skinner’s side will have to settle for a fifth place finish this time out.
