Work begins in Scandinavia in make-or-break season for Ruben Amorim
Manchester United’s preparations for the new campaign have them facing a familiar foe in their opening pre-season game this afternoon.
Ruben Amorim’s side take on Premier League new boys Leeds, who lifted the Championship title under Daniel Farke last term.
There is plenty for the Portuguese head coach to fix at Old Trafford after United stuttered to a 15th-placed finish in the top flight.
Leeds, however, are looking to build momentum ahead of a survival mission. The Whites stayed up three years on the spin on their return to the promised land back in 2020, but they finally went down in 2023.
They bounced back at the second attempt, finishing as champions in the second tier.
Manchester United vs Leeds is scheduled for a 2pm BST kick-off today, Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The match will take place at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Live stream: The match will be shown live exclusively on MUTV, Manchester United’s official television channel. Coverage starts at 1pm BST, an hour ahead of kick-off.
Viewers can subscribe to the channel via the club’s official website and app, or it is available through providers Sky and Virgin for an additional fee.
Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport’s live blog.
Free highlights: Match highlights should be available on United’s website, social media channels and YouTube shortly after full-time.
We could see a host of debuts for this one.
Manchester United’s marquee signing Matheus Cunha could be in line for his first appearance in red, while Diego Leon, the new recruit from Cerro Porteno, could also feature. An agreement has been reached with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo, but he will not join in time to feature.
Andre Onana is ruled out for much of pre-season after he sustained a hamstring injury, and, even if United were to seal a deal for their top transfer target Mbeumo, this game would come too soon for the Cameroonian to play any part.
Otherwise, United are at full-strength, barring Lisandro Martinez, who will most likely not be a part of the travelling squad to Sweden as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
As for Leeds, it remains to be seen whether one-time Man United transfer target Sean Longstaff will feature for the Whites after completing a £13million deal for the Newcastle midfielder.
Farke has been busy in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastiaan Bournauw, and Felix Nmecha, and all three could be in contention to play against United.
Jack Harrison, who has returned to the club after two straight years on loan at Everton, may also be included in the squad.

Despite their horrendous form last term, this friendly match is square one for Amorim and his players.
This is the time to reset and refocus, and the Portuguese head coach will have had ample time to drill his philosophies and ideas into his squad.
Naturally, both managers will experiment at times here, but United’s squad should have enough to defeat a spirited Leeds side.
