It is Newcastle United v Manchester United next up on Sunday.
A big fixture I used to look out for when the Premier League fixtures were released at the start of a season.
Like Liverpool, Man U a team I was desperate to see us beat.
Nowadays though, with a steady decline since Alex Ferguson left nearly 12 years ago, Manchester United have slowly morphed into a mid-table team.
A club that is a complete mess from top to bottom and isn’t showing many signs of significant improvement any time soon.
It still means a lot though, getting one over on Man U.
Years of many defeats, seeing them win things, denying us a few trophies down the years.
I wrote an article on The Mag around the time Newcastle United were due to play Manchester United at Old Trafford and I said something along the lines of, they were rubbish and I fully expected to beat them at old Trafford.
Nothing much has changed.
They are still pretty poor and in all honesty, we should be looking to beat them again on Sunday.
It’s a bigger game on Sunday for Newcastle United, with Champions League football in the offing, whilst Man U have nothing to play for in regards to the league (apart from faint hopes and a dream of finishing top half this season!).
I would also love to see United do the double over Man U as it has never happened in my lifetime.
Indeed, it is something that hasn’t happened in 94 years!
On 13 September 1930, Newcastle went to Old Trafford and won 7-4 in that Division One away match. Then on 17 January 1931 completed the league double at St James’ Park, winning 4-3.
We won’t get a better opportunity to end this run without a league double over Man U, that’s for sure.
I’d happily take 1-0 now if offered it for Sunday, as the three points are the only important thing at this stage of the season
Having said that…
I’d love to see us give them a proper hiding, reminiscent of Kevin Keegan’s team, with Ginola, Ferdinand, Shearer, Peacock and then finally, Albert with that cracking lob at the end.
I think Eddie Howe’s side are capable of doing it, but with two games in quick succession against Man U and Crystal Palace, I would take a couple of one goal victories.
Anyway, all the focus is now just on Sunday and I’m really looking forward to Newcastle United beating Manchester United, creating a bit of history after these 94 years of hurt.
