Dutch striker tipped for quickfire return to Italy

Ruben Amorim admitted Manchester United “will see what happens” to forward Joshua Zirkzee during the January transfer window.

The forward only joined the Red Devils from Bologna back in July for a fee believed to be worth £36.5million.

Still, the manager who signed him in Erik ten Hag was sacked in October following a defeat at West Ham and Zirkzee has struggled to convince.

The 23-year-old has scored only four goals across 28 appearances for the club this season and was sarcastically cheered off when replaced early during the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle last month.

Amorim admitted that was a “brutal” decision, albeit one made to change the system somewhat after a dreadful start rather than down to anything Zirkzee was doing in particular.

In something of a response to that, sections of the away support during the 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday sang the forward’s name while he warmed up.

Juventus, now under the stewardship of Zirkzee’s former Bologna coach Thiago Motta, have been linked with making a quickfire move to bring the Dutchman back to Serie A.

While Amorim has stressed he is keen to keep Zirkzee at Old Trafford this month, the United boss appeared to hint there could be movement when speaking after Sunday’s game.

“I want to keep Josh because he gives everything and he’s trying in training but we don’t know,” said the United boss.

“The window is open and we will see what happens. We just need to focus on training and to take this for the other games. It’s just one point so let’s focus on the performance for the next games."
