Man United Starlet Toby Collyer Considers Loan Move Amid Midfield Battle at Old Trafford

As Manchester United head into the 2025–26 season without European football, the club’s talented midfield prospect Toby Collyer has opened the door to a potential loan move. The 21-year-old, who broke into the first team last year, is now weighing up his next step in the face of fierce competition for places under Ruben Amorim.

Quoted in an exclusive interview covered by The Daily Mail, Collyer said, “My feeling at this moment is I want to stay. First and foremost, I want to be here and play as many games for Man United as possible.” However, he admitted he would sit down with Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox to assess his options, adding, “I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution; the best way for me to develop, whether it’s stay here or go on loan.”

The departure from European competitions limits rotation opportunities this season, and Amorim has made it clear that internal competition will be fierce. “Players will have to fight each other to play,” he warned during United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

A Breakout Year Undercut by Injuries

Collyer enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2024–25, making 13 appearances across all competitions, starting with his debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City. Yet, his campaign was disrupted by a hamstring injury, which limited his impact. “I think it was a really good season for me, for experience and getting minutes,” he said. “The one thing I’m annoyed about is the injuries I’ve picked up.”

Despite those setbacks, Collyer made a crucial contribution during United’s 1–0 win over Fulham, clearing Joachim Andersen’s header off the line in the final moments. He credits his growth in mentality and poise to the influence of senior players like Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro: “The main thing when I speak to them is about staying calm but also playing to my strengths.”

Learning Under Amorim and Elite Standards

Having joined from Brighton in 2022, turning down Chelsea and Brentford in the process, Collyer has grown into an intelligent, mature presence in midfield. His reflections reveal the physical and mental demands required at a club of United’s stature. “Obviously when you’re playing at Man United in the Premier League, the physical demands are the best of the best,” he said. “You’ve got to do the right things on and off the pitch.”

Amorim’s high standards have been on full display during United’s pre-season tour, with Collyer enjoying his time in Chicago. He jokingly mentioned the competitive five-a-side matches in training: “It’s jeopardy if you lose. Every day you’ve got to be proving yourself.”

What Lies Ahead for Collyer?

United’s new-look midfield, potentially featuring a deeper Bruno Fernandes and competition from incoming signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, leaves Collyer’s game time uncertain. A loan move could offer the regular minutes he needs to continue progressing without stalling his momentum.

Ultimately, Collyer remains focused and grounded. “The end goal for me is to play as many minutes as possible here, hopefully starting every week,” he concluded. Wherever he plays this season, his development will be closely watched by fans and coaches alike.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Manchester United fans, Collyer’s attitude and potential are refreshing in a world of inflated egos and manufactured personas. It’s clear he wants to fight for his place, but he’s also pragmatic about what it takes to succeed long-term. And with Ruben Amorim now at the helm, we’ve got a manager who doesn’t hand out minutes on reputation alone.

From a fan’s perspective, it’s encouraging to see a young player showing such maturity. That goal-line clearance against Fulham was symbolic of the kind of player Collyer can be: focused, committed and ready to put the team first. It also echoed something we’ve missed in midfield at times — calmness under pressure.

Given the lack of European football, a loan spell could genuinely benefit Collyer. If he goes to a Premier League or top Championship side and plays every week, he could return sharper, hungrier and more experienced. But there’s also an argument to keep him. If Amorim is building a culture based on merit and intensity, then having someone like Collyer pushing the starters every day in training is just as valuable.

Either way, he looks like someone who’s going to be part of United’s midfield fabric for years to come. The way he speaks, the way he carries himself, and the players he’s learning from all point to a bright future — and fans should be excited.
