Manchester United are advancing their efforts to sign Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Last month, The Peoples Person relayed that Man United had taken an interest in the Lille shot-stopper, who conceded just 27 goals in 27 Ligue 1 matches, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.
United are not alone in their admiration of Chevalier, however. Paris-Saint Germain reportedly signalled their interest in the player, surely hoping to use their UEFA Champions League title as leverage to convince him to join the Parisian club.
Aston Villa went one step further, reportedly offering Lille €40 million for the rising star.
Despite facing such stiff competition, United do not appear willing to step down from the fight.
“Manchester United and Aston Villa have both set their sights on LOSC Lille star Lucas Chevalier,” TEAMTalk reported today, indicating that United are very much still in the transfer race for the French goalkeeper.
“Both Premier League clubs have identified the French shot-stopper as an option to bolster their goalkeeping ranks, with sources indicating active interest from both sides.”
“Villa see Chevalier as a prime candidate to replace Martinez, with sporting director Monchi leading talks,” the article continued before dropping the biggest bombshell: “United, meanwhile, have also contacted Chevalier’s representatives, viewing him as a potential successor to Andre Onana.”
Intriguingly, Villa’s pursuit of Chevalier appears to be motivated by Emi Martinez’s potential departure. Martinez, Villa’s starting keeper, is ironically being linked with a move to United.
As such, it seems that there is a reasonable possibility that United could sign either Chevalier or Martinez this summer.
Either player would surely be a welcome addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad, especially given the disappointing performances of both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
Ultimately, no matter who United ultimately pursues, a new goalkeeper is an essential signing should the club hope to improve their fortunes next season.
