Manchester United have joined Barcelona in the battle to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, as per reports.

Erik ten Hag’s side have struggled to take their chances in the opening fixtures of the season. However, his wingers, in particular Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo have enjoyed promising starts, troubling defences with their pace and dribbling ability.

Still, a report from Spain suggests the Red Devils are positioning themselves to make a high-profile signing for their flanks.

Barca have long been linked with Williams, who seemed their priority target during the recently concluded transfer window.

However, the Spain international eventually decided to continue with his boyhood club for another campaign.

According to Fichajes, the Blaugrana remain interested in the 22-year-old, who played a key role in Spain’s Euro triumph over the summer.

Known for his direct style of play and creative instincts, Williams, who registered an impressive 19 assists across all competitions last term, is capable of improving any team’s attack.

United appear to have taken note of his rise, as the Spanish outlet claims the Mancunians have entered the race for his services.

The Premier League outfit are “determined” to beat Barcelona to the signature of one of Spain’s most promising talents.

Williams has a contract until the summer of 2027 with Ernesto Valverde-led side. However, according to The Athletic, his deal includes a release clause in the region of €55 million.

It is added both European powerhouses are “willing to make a considerable financial effort” to sign the player from Bilbao. United are believed to be prepared to “go all out”  and “make an offer” for the Spanish star.

Ineos flexed their muscles this summer by beating Real Madrid to Leny Yoro. Their popularity in Manchester would only increase if they manage to do the same to the other Spanish giants next year.
