Manchester United are among the clubs chasing RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons, as per reports.
United’s recruitment team seem to be determined to add plenty of creativity to their ranks in their attempts to turn the fortunes of their toothless attack.
They have already signed Wolverhampton Wanderers’ playmaker Matheus Cunha and talks are understood to be progressing well between the Red Devils and Brentford over the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo.
However, a report in Germany suggests United intend to hand another attacking midfielder to Ruben Amorim.
According to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), United are battling Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Arsenal for the signature of Simons.
The ex-PSG talent has been a key player at RB Leipzig since 2023, having scored 21 goals and registered 23 assists for the German outfit.
The 22-year-old mainly thrives as a number 10 but he is also capable of playing as a left-winger.
During the winter transfer window, Leipzig struck an agreement with PSG for the Dutchman’s permanent transfer. However, he is widely expected to depart the Bundesliga outfit this summer.
Leipzig are not expected to resist too much, with the German publication claiming they are prepared to sell Simons for €70m (£59.8m). The Netherlands international is viewed as one of the “standout candidates” for a sale at the Red Bull club.
It is understood the player’s brother, Faustino, has been in talks with top clubs. However, it is not specified that he has held discussions with each of the Premier League sides mentioned.
It is difficult to see United push too hard for Simons as they are unlikely to spend a considerable fee on yet another attacking midfielder, especially when there are more glaring holes that need to be filled this summer.
A new striker appears to be United’s priority and they have shown interest in Simons’ teammate Benjamin Sesko. However, Arsenal are thought to be in pole position in that race.
