While adding creativity in the attacking midfield zone is important, what Manchester United need most of all ahead of the new season is a ruthless finisher.
Rasmus Hojlund cannot cut it up front on his own, and INEOS are close to agreeing a deal with Inter Milan for his departure.
Once Bryan Mbeumo’s arrival is confirmed, the Red Devils will focus on sales to raise capital, which can then be reinvested to add a striker, preferably Ruben Amorim’s former Sporting CP protégé Viktor Gyokeres.
The head coach had demanded the Swedish ace’s signature in January, but INEOS could not manage the funds and hence, the Swede ended up staying in Lisbon.
There were reports that he only wanted to move to a club in the Champions League, and after United’s heartbreaking loss in the Europa League final, the general feeling was a summer deal was unlikely to pan out.
The 20-time English league champions were fishing from their B list of targets until recently, when reports surfaced stating the 27-year-old would be keen to reunite with his former boss should United manage to close the deal financially.
The Old Trafford side need roughly around €70 million to seal his signing with Arsenal also reportedly interested, not to mention Saudi Pro League sides.
Now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Givemesport that United have held further discussions with Viktor Gyokeres and his camp this past week and are monitoring the situation around him closely.
“Manchester United should not be considered out of the race – at least, at this stage of the summer window.
“Sources reveal that Manchester United had more contacts with all parties involved in Gyokeres deal this week, to understand how the situation was developing for the Swedish striker.
“It means Manchester United remain in the race and are currently informed on every step of the story, as they’re also aware of Italian clubs exploring the situation for Gyokeres. Man United keep being informed and are in contact with his camp – as they’ve been again this week.”
If the exits of Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho can be facilitated, especially on permanent deals, there is no reason why a move for the Sweden international cannot pan out.
The Gunners have also moved on to Benjamin Sesko, another hint that the Sporting striker is certainly up for grabs. Victor Osimhen is also available, and fans are waiting with bated breath to see who ultimately lands up at the Theatre of Dreams.
