Much has been written about Manchester United’s desperate search for a striker. However, that is not the only position the club are looking at improving.
After a long-drawn out chase, United struck an agreement with Brentford for the signing of Bryan Mbeumo last week. He becomes United’s second major signing of the summer after the arrival of Matheus Cunha.
Both attackers are expected to play as wide playmakers under Ruben Amorim, who is also keen to sign a new goalscorer to play ahead of the newly-signed pair.
However, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, a new number six in midfield is also “on the Old Trafford agenda.” Amid this, a report in Spain have linked United with a Barcelona midfielder.
According to El Nacional (via Football365), Marc Casado is “attracting serious attention” from United, as the 21-year-old talent is highly admired by Ruben Amorim.
It is claimed that the United head coach sees the Spaniard as an ideal fit for his system due to his tactical intelligence, close control and intensity out of possession.
However, Barca are determined to keep hold of their academy product. The defensive midfielder has made 23 La Liga appearances under Hansi Flick, who is counting on him for next season.
The Spain U21 international is tied to the Blaugrana until 2028 and his contract includes a €100m release clause.
However, United are “pushing”. They are considering “submitting a formal offer in August.” Their priority at the moment is to offload their fringe players. Recently, the Red Devils sent Marcus Rashford out on loan to Camp Nou.
It is understood that the Mancunians believe they can “convince both the player and Barça with an offer close to €40 million.”
Earlier this month, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are eyeing a move for Casado to potentially replace Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan midfielder only arrived at Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain last summer in a deal worth an initial £42m.
He has impressed with his aggressive style of play and ball recoveries. However, the ex-Sporting CP midfielder has been less convincing with the ball at his feet.
