Paris Saint-Germain have endured a torrid time in this season’s UEFA Champions League. With just one win, which came courtesy of a last-minute Paulo Gazzaniga howler in their opener against La Liga side Girona, they currently sit 25th in the revamped “League Phase” of the competition, which means that they are currently on course for a premature exit from the competition.
It comes after a relatively successful campaign from PSG last season where they reached the semi-finals of the competition, ultimately coming unstuck against Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. Whilst with the German side, Erling Haaland netted a brace against Les Parisiens, during the 2019/20 campaign before PSG ultimately reversed the scoreline in the second leg. That season, the Ligue 1 giants reached the final of the Champions League ultimately losing to Bayern Munich.
And that is as close as PSG have come to winning the highly-coveted title, however speaking to Canal Plus Sport, Haaland, now at Manchester City has lauded the French side’s Champions League credentials. “PSG will always be a good team. It is a very big club and it will always be a team with big players. For sure, it will be hard to play against them in January in the Champions League but it will be a great match I’m sure,” said Haaland, previewing the tie against Manchester City on January 22nd.
He added, “Yes, I think that PSG are still a candidate [to win] the Champions League. PSG will always be there to rival the best teams.”
