Ederson’s replacement at the Etihad Stadium may come in the form of a bargain market opportunity for Manchester City officials, reports in Spain are indicating.

With the aforementioned Brazilian goalkeeper’s future at the Etihad Stadium still subject to widespread uncertainty and speculation, new reports have now named a surprise candidate in Manchester City’s succession planning.

Ederson’s long-term position in the City squad has been questioned for over a year now, with multiple windows seeing interest emerge from Saudi Arabia. While the 30-year-old remains under contract until the summer of 2026, City officials are known to be preparing contingency plans in the event of his departure, which could still materialise before the end of August.

One of the standout names previously linked has been Diogo Costa of FC Porto, although there is an acceptance within the club that a move for the Portuguese international may demand an enormous financial investment.

Elsewhere and Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio was also reportedly monitored by Etihad recruitment bosses, but has since committed his future to the Bianconeri according to Italian press, leaving Manchester City’s shortlist in need of fresh targets.

Now, according to the information of Spanish newspaper AS – as translated and relayed by Sport WitnessManchester City are in the picture to sign Barcelona’s seemingly third-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen this summer.

The updated role for the German comes after the La Liga giants signed Joan García from Espanyol last month and saw Wojciech Szczęsny extend his contract until 2027, while manager Hansi Flick is said to have informed ter Stegen that his minutes would be reduced drastically.

As such, the growing tension at the club and the situation as a whole is said to have attracted both Manchester City and Galatasaray’s attention, aware of the fact that Barca are looking to sell for a discounted price in order to get rid of his high salary.

The report claims that both the Premier League and Turkish Super Lig giants are ‘keen to secure [his services for] a low price’, while Pep Guardiola’s side see ter Stegen as Ederson’s replacement in this case.

A move for ter Stegen would represent a dramatic change in dynamic at the Etihad Stadium. The 33-year-old is vastly experienced, a long-time international for Germany, and an iconic figure at Barcelona — but one now entering the final years of his peak.

For City, however, the opportunity to bring in such pedigree at a reduced fee could offer a rare value play in a typically expensive market for goalkeepers. What remains to be seen is how Ederson’s situation develops over the coming weeks.

Should a firm proposal arrive from Saudi Arabia — as has been rumoured for two summers running — Manchester City would be in a position to react quickly. Ter Stegen’s name adds a new dimension to that planning, particularly given the relative lack of competition for his signature and the player’s potential desire to remain at a high level in Europe.

With pre-season around the corner and a new campaign drawing closer, City may look to resolve their goalkeeping uncertainty sooner rather than later, and whether ter Stegen becomes the headline act in that process — or remains just another name on an evolving shortlist — is one storyline to watch closely over the coming weeks.
