Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have made a late formal approach for FC Porto midfielder Nico González. However, the Premier League club isn’t keen on triggering his release clause of €60 million and will try to bring his value down.
Nico González is a La Masia graduate who switched to FC Porto in the summer of 2023. Since then, he has been able to enhance his game further and establish himself as a mainstay in the squad, attracting eyeballs from across the globe.

González is enjoying a great campaign so far as he has already netted seven goals and provided six assists in 29 games. He is averaging 1.5 shots, 0.8 key passes, and 0.8 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish midfielder is versatile to don different roles in the midfield. He is known for his visionary passes and aerial presence. He is a good carrier of the ball with sensible decision-making skills and effective dribbling abilities.
Manchester City have made some notable recruitments in the winter window but they aren’t looking to stop there. In the absence of Rodri, their midfield still looks a bit shaky and might need more reinforcements to be able to compete.
Though Nico Gonzalez isn’t an ideal replacement for Rodri, the former’s versatility and qualities can be useful. He adds different elements to the side and can be a long-term investment for the Citizens.
The 23-year-old has a year and a half left on his current contract with a release clause of €60 million. Manchester City aren’t willing to trigger that amount and will only look to bring him if the Portuguese outfit are ready to negotiate. In that case, FC Porto might prefer retaining the player as 40 per cent of the price will be alloted to FC Barcelona.
