You could tell during Manchester City’s 1-all draw with Everton yesterday that this Manchester City squad is in desperate need of new players. There is too big a burden being placed on fatigued and injured players currently. With the January transfer window set to open in a few days, it appears that City will be busy next month. It simply has to be based on how this season has transpired.

In quotes relayed by Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail Pep Guardiola knows that his team needs new players. Speaking on the subject Guardiola said: “The transfer window in the winter is not easy. It’s about bringing a player for the next four or five years and we’ll have to see. We have to try because this (form) is sustained for a long time. Even the players know that we have to add some new players. But after, when these players come and play in their positions, then they are unhappy. But we have a lot (of injuries) and this is a problem.

It is obvious now that Manchester City must move in January. They stood still last summer and are paying the price for that now. City can’t afford to do the same in January. They simply must find players who can aid their cause. Too much has been left to too few this season as injuries, age and fatigue have hit Pep Guardiola’s side. The only way for Manchester City to aid their cause this season is to strengthen their squad in January. Now a new report indicates that they will.

Sam Lee has reported for the Athletic that Manchester City will look to sign a defender, a midfielder and an attacker next month. Based on what we saw against Everton yesterday and over City’s past thirteen games they simply have to make those moves next month. Pep Guardiola’s squad is running on fumes and they need more players to provide depth. But the players they bring in must be part of Manchester City’s future as stop gap moves will simply delay Manchester City’s rebuild. That’s the size of the task at hand for Manchester City next month and it will be fascinating to watch unfold.
