Officials at Manchester City have began contacts with both PSG and the entourage of Gianluigi Donnarumma over a potential transfer for the Italy international.
While City appear settled for the 2025/26 season with Ederson as their starting goalkeeper, the club’s transfer team continues to explore elite alternatives should the situation change amid ongoing interest on the continent.
The Brazilian has been the subject of advances from Galatasaray this summer, although no advanced talks have emerged in recent weeks. Still, City are known for preparing contingency plans well in advance, and the profile of a new world-renowned stopper has emerged.
Manchester City’s goalkeeping department has already undergone changes with James Trafford having returned from Burnley in a British-record deal for a goalkeeper worth £31 million, signalling long-term planning between the posts.
Stefan Ortega’s future remains less certain, with the German keen to secure regular football elsewhere amid Premier League and Bundesliga interest. The departure of veteran Scott Carson, replaced by Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli, has further reshaped the squad’s depth.
Donnarumma, 26, has been on the radar of top European clubs for years and increasingly so this summer, combining size, reflexes, and experience at the highest level with both PSG and Italy. The opportunity to bring him to Manchester would be viewed not just as a reaction to an Ederson exit, but as a chance to future-proof a critical position for the next decade.
As first reported by journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Manchester City are now monitoring Gianluigi Donnarumma in the event of Ederson leaving the club. It is claimed negotiations are ongoing on the Italian’s side, and personal terms would not be an issue with the player keen.
Follow-up reporting in Hawkins’ wider read for RMC Sport states that Donnarumma is highly regarded by Pep Guardiola and the player is very interested in City. However, Etihad officials will only make an offer to PSG if Ederson leaves, and if the Parisiens are ‘not greedy’ in talks.
As per Fabrizio Romano, City have already made contact with PSG to ask for deal conditions around Donnarumma, revealing a request of around €50 million – deemed too high for the Etihad club, and a deal only possible – once again – if Ederson leaves.
From the side of potential competitors in the chase for the Italy international, the same report insists that Chelsea are not in the race for the player, who will clarify his position over his future ‘soon’.
If Ederson does remain in Manchester this summer, City are unlikely to make an immediate push for Donnarumma although the player’s willingness to join could perhaps keep the door open for a future move. A drop in PSG’s asking price, or a shift in Ederson’s stance, could quickly accelerate talks.
For now, the situation rests on two variables: PSG’s flexibility in negotiations and whether Manchester City’s current and long-standing number one in Ederson decides to seek a new challenge.
Should either change in the coming weeks, the Etihad Stadium’s recruitment hierarchy could find themselves moving for one of the most high-profile goalkeeping deals of the summer window.
