Manchester United have Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson on their radar and firmly in their sights as they look to bolster their options in the position, according to the Sun.

The Red Devils want stiffer competition for Andre Onana as 26-year-old Altay Bayindir has only managed to play two games since joining in the summer of 2023, and the Black Cats star has emerged as a serious target.

Man United’s keeper scout Tony Coton has continued to run the rule over Patterson, and the Old Trafford club have concluded he fits the bill.

The England youth international has been a mainstay for the Championship club since 2021-22, with 130 appearances so far with them.

Sunderland are eyeing Premier League promotion this season, and Man United will have to wait until summer to have a realistic chance of luring their goalie away.

Joining the Red Devils will appeal to Patterson, but he could prefer to remain with the Black Cats if they secure a return to the English top-flight next season instead of settling for a place on the Man United bench.

Onana has established himself as first-choice since replacing David de Gea, but the Cameroon international needs someone capable of giving him a run for the money and keeping him on his toes, and Patterson is perfect for the job.

Signing him will spend the end for Bayindir at the Old Trafford club, and the Turkey international has been tipped to move on after struggling for game time since his arrival.

Man United will also look to strengthen across other areas of the pitch following another woeful start to a campaign.

They lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at Old Trafford and could do with better players in attack if they are serious about challenging for the Premier League title anytime soon.
