Manchester United have announced the departure of left-back Tyrell Malacia on a loan deal to PSV Eindhoven for the remainder of the season.
The Dutch defender was signed by Erik ten Hag from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 for a fee in the region of £13m. After earning regular minutes - usually when Luke Shaw wasn't fit enough to feature - the energetic left-footer was forced into the treatment room himself.
Malacia was sidelined for 17 long months, missing the entire 2023/24 campaign and only making his first Premier League appearance in December. The 25-year-old has only been fit enough to last more than 45 minutes once this season, prompting speculation of his desire to leave Old Trafford in search of a new environment in which to build up his fitness.
Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce had been linked with Malacia, while a move to Portuguese giants Benfica was so close to completion the player reportedly said goodbye to his teammates. Both those moves fell through, but Malacia has still left Old Trafford for the familiar setting of the Dutch top flight.
While the English transfer window closed on Monday, Eredivisie sides had an additional day to finalise their business, giving PSV enough time to strike an agreement with Malacia.
During his five years in the Feyenoord first team, the last of which was spent under the tutelage of current Liverpool boss Arne Slot, Malacia racked up 98 Eredivisie appearances.
Peter Bosz's PSV are the defending league champions and once again lead the standings. The Eindhoven outfit also advanced to the first knockout phase of the new-look Champions League, where they were paired with Serie A's Juventus in this month's play-offs.
Despite their strong positioning in both domestic and continental competition, an extra defensive presence won't harm Bosz's leaky side; PSV have conceded a staggering 14 goals in their last six matches.
Manchester United preemptively replaced Malacia with the permanent acquisition of Patrick Dorgu, who is expected to finally offer Ruben Amorim a consistent and natural option at left wing-back.
