Ruben Amorim quietly ended a 10-year Manchester derby streak for the Red Devils on Sunday afternoon.

The complete snoozefest of a derby culminated with the spoils being shared at Old Trafford, with both sides seemingly resigned to settling for a draw in order to fully concentrate on other competitions: the Europa League in Manchester United’s case and the FA Cup in Manchester City’s.

Neither team really got out of first gear throughout the 90 minutes. The hosts recorded a higher expected goals statistic, while City just edged the tie on shots on target (five to United’s two), possession (59 per cent) and passes (564 to 381).

Aside from the lacklustre affair, fans likely missed the record Amorim put a stop to prior to kick-off, as his matchday squad contained no Mancunians in the derby for the first time since October 2015.

Over the last decade, at least one spot has always been occupied by Marcus Rashford. However, his winter loan switch to Aston Villa has presumably spelt the end of his Old Trafford tenure, given that United included a £40 million buy option in his terms.

Stockport-born Kobbie Mainoo would’ve been another option had the game come slightly later in the term. He has been sidelined since the beginning of February with an injury but is believed to be closing in on his long-awaited return in the coming weeks.

His impending availability is set to cause a selection headache for Amorim, who has struggled to utilise the youngster in the right way. Still, he’s the type of player you build your team around, and INEOS chiefs want to keep that in mind amid reports of them paving the way for his sale due to contract negotiations.
