Manchester United’s pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha is not going as smoothly as planned, with the player’s representatives scheduling meetings with other clubs, according to surprise reports.
Cunha has long been seen as a likely arrival at Old Trafford, with Fabrizio Romano reporting last month that United’s interest was serious and David Ornstein confirming yesterday that the Red Devils have made an offer to the 25-year-old.
But according to TBR Football there is a twist in the tale, with Cunha’s agents keen to keep their options open going into the summer transfer window.
According to the report “Cunha’s agents are now saying that they have meetings scheduled with other clubs aside from Man United.”
Those clubs include Premier League rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United, both of whom have already had conversations about the powerful attacker.
To allay United concerns, however, the report continues that Cunha himself “has already confirmed he wants to join Man United and they are just finalising the financial aspects.”
The outlet then doubles down on its earlier claims that United “hope to get a deal for Cunha over the line by the end of the season” and further fuel speculation that this will happen by noting that his current employers are equally eager to get things wrapped up.
They write that Wolves want the deal done “as soon as possible”, and are playing their part by agreeing to receive payment in instalments for the Brazilian.
In this context the reported claims by Cunha’s entourage make little sense, especially considering that the forward has a release clause of £62.5m, meaning there is no possibility of stoking up a bidding war.
It is possible that they are hoping to drive up United’s wage offering for their client, but ultimately it seems unlikely to derail a move which all parties are keen on completing.
Cunha has had a phenomenal season for Wolves, with 17 goals and 6 assists in 33 appearances in all competitions.
He would fit in perfectly as a combative number 10 in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, and has the right amount of drive and unpredictability to unsettle opposition defences just as he did United’s earlier in the season.
