United failed to get out of the group stages last year, losing their last match 1-4 to Huddersfield Town.

They youngsters did complete a couple of impressive comebacks in a 3-2 win over Barnsley and a 3-3 draw with Doncaster Rovers, however.

Peterborough United would finally lift the trophy in April after beating Birmingham City 2-0 in the final.

United’s official website have announced which group the Red Devils will be a part of next season.

The site reports, “Travis Binnion’s side will expect to gain valuable experience playing away in each of the three ties against senior opposition from the Football League, with the fixtures to be announced at a later date.”

United were placed in group D in the Northern section and will play against Barnsley, just like last season.

The Tykes finished 12th in League One last year and will provide stiff competition for the young United side.

They will also take on Lincoln City and Notts County in the other two matches of the group stage.

Lincoln are also a League One team and finished one place above Barnsley last season in 11th place.

Notts County finished sixth in League Two last season but lost their playoff semi-final to AFC Wimbledon.

The website states that “there is also a full southern section to the competition but this will not affect our youngsters until deeper into the knockout stages, when the regionality is removed.”
