Manchester United will reportedly not be making a move for Sporting Lisbon talisman Viktor Gyokeres because of Ruben Amorim’s transfer agreement with his former club.
Since Amorim took over as Erik ten Hag’s replacement at United, Gyökeres has been frequently linked with a move to the club. While both the player and coach have dismissed these rumours, speculation continues to persist.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person Gyokeres will push for a January exit in a bid to secure a big-money move elsewhere.
It was also claimed that Amorim wants INEOS to secure the Swedish goal machine’s services in January but according to Simon Mullock of The Mirror, it appears this is certainly not the case.
Mullock reveals that the Red Devils “will not be signing” Gyokeres this month because Amorim promised Sporting he wouldn’t raid them during the winter transfer window.
Amorim made this vow to the Estádio José Alvalade outfit as a means to help smooth his switch to United. The promise was made as “a gesture of goodwill” to the club that he led to the Portuguese title last year.
Indeed, in one of his press conferences just before parting ways with Sporting, Amorim said, “I’m not going to sign anyone from Sporting in January.”
“But I don’t know what I’m going to do in the summer.”
On Friday evening Gyokeres sent a timely reminder to United of what he can bring to the table if he were to join them.
The 26-year-old netted his 71st, 72nd and 73rd goals in 78 appearances for Sporting as they rescued a 4-4 draw in added time against Vitoria SC.
Gyokeres’ hat trick took his tally for the season to 30 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions.
United are back in action on Sunday when they take on bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield. Kick-off is at 16:30 GMT.
