Manchester United are managing a number of injury and fitness issues ahead of a crucial trip to Craven Cottage. Ruben Amorim has had to rotate his options as he seeks a balance between integrating new signings and keeping faith in those who impressed in pre-season. Among the most talked-about situations are those concerning Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Lisandro Martinez.
The absence of Andre Onana from the squad against Arsenal caught the attention of supporters. The Cameroonian goalkeeper had only taken part in four training sessions since returning from injury, which made his omission less surprising. Amorim initially suggested that Onana had been available for selection, before clarifying his reasoning.
“He recovered,” Amorim told MUTV when asked if Onana was still injured.
“But the other guys [Bayindir and Tom Heaton] did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that.”
In his post-match press conference, the Manchester United manager expanded on his decision.
“No, no, no, I didn’t drop Onana from the squad,” he said.
“I didn’t drop one of the other two from the squad. So it’s not the case of dropping Onana, it’s not putting Onana with just one week [of training], without seeing a game, without time with training. Tom and Altay during pre-season, they did a good job.”
Onana is expected to be in contention for the visit to Fulham on Sunday, 24 August, provided he comes through the final week of training unscathed.

Rasmus Hojlund was another notable absentee from the 20-man squad against Arsenal. The Danish striker has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford following the arrival of Benjamin Sesko, with reports suggesting AC Milan are exploring a transfer.
Matheus Cunha led the line against Arsenal before Sesko entered from the bench to take over the centre-forward role. Joshua Zirkzee, himself recovering from injury, was left on the bench without featuring.
Amorim explained that Hojlund was omitted due to competition for places rather than fitness.
“We’ll see what is going to happen on the market, different characteristics.
“So Rasmus has the same characteristics of Sesko, so sometimes we need to choose.”
At 22, Hojlund remains a young forward with potential, but his position in the squad appears under review. Like Onana, he could return for the Fulham match.
Noussair Mazraoui has not been available since sustaining a thigh problem during United’s opening pre-season friendly against Leeds. Having featured 57 times last season, his absence has been a setback for Amorim’s defensive plans. The Moroccan is targeting a return for the clash with Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, 30 August.
Lisandro Martinez continues his recovery from the serious ACL injury suffered in February against Crystal Palace. While his rehabilitation has progressed positively, United are not expected to rush him back. The Argentine defender, a key figure in the back line, is projected to be available in late October, potentially for the home fixture against Brighton on 25 October.
Manchester United will be hopeful that both Onana and Hojlund can return in the short term, while Martinez’s steady progress provides longer-term reassurance for supporters. Amorim’s squad depth will be tested in the coming weeks, but his handling of these situations suggests a calculated approach to squad rotation and player welfare.
