Manchester United have been handed a huge blow in their pursuit of Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier as a leading European club closes in on his signature.
United’s goalkeeping department could be subjected to a radical overhaul this summer, amidst uncertainty over the long-term futures of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
Onana and Bayindir both struggled for form last season, making numerous high-profile mistakes that dearly cost United in games.
There is an acceptance that neither is the answer for United and for the team to move forward, reinforcements may be needed between the sticks. United continue to be linked to a number of shot-stoppers including Emi Martinez (Aston Villa), John Victor (Botafogo), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton) and Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp).
Chevalier is another who’s name has constantly popped up.
It’s not surprising that United are believed to be admirers of Chevalier. The Frenchman has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and enjoyed a spectacular 2024/25 campaign.
He was named Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year for his outstanding performances. The Lille man kept 11 clean sheets in the 34 top-flight appearances he made.
A report covered by The Peoples Person late last month relayed that United had established contact to explore the possibility of signing Chevalier.
The 23-year-old is a self-confessed fan of the Premier League. In addition to United, Aston Villa have also been mentioned as admirers of the goalkeeper.
However, it appears United and any other suitors from England are poised to miss out on Chevalier as he inches closer to joining Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper as speculation over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s tenure at the club rumbles on.
Donnarumma, who is thought to be wanted by United, has yet to sign a new contract to extend his stay at PSG despite weeks of talks. The Italy international’s current terms expire in 2026 and PSG are entertaining a possible sale this summer to avoid losing him on a free in a year’s time.
The reigning Champions League and Ligue 1 winners are seemingly preparing for life without Donnarumma and have identified Chevalier as his replacement.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports, “Paris Saint-Germain have agreed personal terms with Lucas Chevalier.”
“Talks ongoing with Lille as request starts from €40m, as L’Équipe reported. PSG start moving as they still can not agree new deal with Gigio Donnarumma.”
Barring a major twist, United look set to miss out on Chevalier. This development could pave the way for a move for Donnarumma, though prising him away from the French capital won’t come cheap.
