Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says his side’s transfer dealings will be limited this summer due to financial fair play.
After finishing in 15th place in the Premier League, United’s last chance at qualification for European football was the Europa League Final, which they ended up losing after Tottenham defeated them 1-0. A lack of European competition will be a major issue for the Red Devils, who look to bounce back next campaign.
Wolves forwards Matheus Cunha is reportedly close to joining the club, whilst talks with Brentford star Bryan Mbuemo have taken place.
Speaking during a press conference in Malaysia, ahead of a friendly with ASEAN All-Stars, Amorim admitted that whilst there will be additions to his squad, United are unable to do much more than that due to financial fair play restrictions.
“It’s a good opportunity to see the young players and sometimes we have surprises like Ayden [Heaven], who every time he has played, has proved that he’s a first-team player,” Amorim said. “Without the Champions League we also don’t need a big squad, we can control in a better way.
“Then we have a plan that is to bring [in] some new players. Our big plan is to improve the team we have and improve the academy as that is our future, as it was in past. It’s not going to change so much.
“We have financial fair play rules, so we are not allowed to do so much this summer.
“The important thing is to stick together. We are going to struggle and it is not going to be everything right away. I have a feeling the team is improving and that is the most important thing.”
Outgoings are expected at Old Trafford, but one player who has been linked to an potential exit, captain Bruno Fernandes is someone Amorim does not want to lose after yet another standout season from the Portuguese international.
“We talk about this many times. You can see by the performance. You can see by the leadership. You can see the passion he has for the game.
“In difficult moments Bruno is the guy who takes responsibility. He should do because he is the captain. He is really important for us and what we want to build for the team.”
