Manchester United have reached an agreement for the signing of Southampton youngster Harley Emsden-James, according to a well-connected source.
Harley Emsden-James, 16, is a centre-back and considered one of the brightest prospects in Southampton’s academy.
A host of clubs in the Premier League have expressed interested in signing the defender in recent months, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as United.
But it was the Red Devils who were “leading the chase” to sign Emsden-James with Jason Wilcox proving influential in the pursuit as the sporting director previously worked for the Saints.
Academy Scoop, an excellent source for youth football, reveals United have now “agreed a deal” to sign the 16-year-old defender.
Tweet: “Exclusive: Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Harley Emsden-James from Southampton.
Several other Premier League clubs made approaches to sign the talented centre back, but he was convinced by United’s proposal of a long term project and eventual pathway.”
The report reveals United’s presentation of a “long term project and eventual pathway [to the first-team]” convinced Emsden-James to choose Old Trafford, despite “several other Premier League clubs” also making approaches.
Centre Devils reveals Southampton will receive £1 million in compensation as part of the move.
There has been a renewed emphasis on United securing the best young talent across world football since INEOS assumed control of the football operation at the Theatre of Dreams.
Chido Obi (17) and Ayden Heaven (18) were both captured from Arsenal while Sekou Kone (19) was signed from Mali side Guidars FC and Paraguayan starlet Diego Leon (18) will join from Cerro Porteño this summer.
Both Obi and Heaven have already made their senior debuts for the Reds under Ruben Amorim this season, while a host of youngsters from the academy have been included in match-day squads or drafted in for first-team training at the Portuguese’s request.
The “pathway” for youngsters at Old Trafford is clear and acts as an important gambit for the club in negotiations, as evidenced by Emsden-James rebuffing other offers in favour of United’s.
