Man City push for top-five security against weakened Palace side

There is often something misleading about routine fixtures. Manchester City at home to Crystal Palace has the look of inevitability, but recent history suggests otherwise. Palace, for all their inconsistencies, have caused Guardiola’s side moments of rare discomfort — four times in their last seven meetings, City have dropped points. It’s a statistic that does not escape either camp as the Premier League returns this weekend.

Yet context changes everything. Palace arrive wounded, both literally and metaphorically. Their chaotic win over Brighton last week — a 3-2 thriller shadowed by three red cards — leaves them without key players for the trip north. Marc Guehi and Eddie Nketiah are suspended, while Maxence Lacroix is a doubt after suffering a concussion. At centre-back, Oliver Glasner could be forced into emergency measures, with Chris Richards possibly returning from injury to plug the gap.
For City, this is a moment to reinforce their grip on a Champions League place — no longer guaranteed by a top-four finish but, in light of European coefficient shifts, top five will likely suffice. With Arsenal’s continental form boosting England’s allocation, Guardiola has some breathing space. That said, his side remain far from full strength.
Erling Haaland, Rodri, Nathan Ake, John Stones, and Manuel Akanji all remain sidelined, though no fresh injuries were reported this week. There is a sense that this side is operating at 80%, its muscle memory carrying it through domestic engagements even as the sharpness flickers.

Kevin De Bruyne is expected to captain the side again, while Jack Grealish and Savinho may return to the starting XI after sitting out the Manchester derby. Phil Foden’s indifferent form will be a concern; another underwhelming showing could lead to rotation.

Palace, disjointed in structure but sporadically dangerous in transition, will see flaws in City’s backline. Guardiola’s defence has conceded more than a goal per game on average this season — an anomaly compared to campaigns past. But a depleted Palace squad may struggle to exploit this vulnerability, especially without Nketiah up front and Guehi shoring up the back.

Given the personnel and form guide, City should edge this — but likely without comfort. The balance of talent remains heavily in their favour, even if the performance levels don’t always reflect it.
