Southampton are set for a busy summer under Will Still as they look to build a team that can win promotion next season.
Southampton are gearing up for an exciting summer window as they prepare for life under Will Still.
The Saints suffered a humiliating relegation from the top-flight last season, as they became the earliest side to go down in the history of the Premier League.
However, that embarrassment has been replaced by optimism for the majority, thanks to the appointment of Still, who is seen as a real coup given his CV.
After impressing in Belgium, Still has made a name for himself as an accomplished head coach after his work with Reims and most recently RC Lens in France.
That had put him on the radar of Premier League clubs, but Southampton managed to convince the 32-year-old to come to the south coast.
Now, the hierarchy needs to support Still in the window, as he will no doubt have targets who he wants to bring in to implement his style of play.
Pleasingly, Still is inheriting a group that is packed full of quality by Championship standards, so major work isn’t required, but they will still need new faces through the door, and here we look at how a perfect window could look for Saints…
It’s natural for Still to consider players he has worked with in the past, and Juma Bah is an exciting defender who could become a key figure for Southampton.
The centre-back joined Lens on loan from Man City in January, and he put in some huge defensive displays for the French side, which proved why he is so highly-rated.
City clearly value Still’s ability to improve players, and a full season for Bah with Southampton could be just what the 19-year-old needs for his development.
At 6ft5 and with good recovery pace, Bah has the physicality to cope with the Championship, and he could blossom into a top defender at this level over the coming months.
With doubts over the future of Jan Bednarek, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Armel Bella-Kotchap, bringing in a centre-back could quickly become a priority - and Bah would fit the bill.
Realistically, Tyler Dibling is going to move on during this window, and that will leave Saints short of pace and quality out wide aside from Kamaldeen Sulemana, who may also have admirers.
We don’t know how Still will set the team up, but the squad will need several individuals who can beat a player and bring some unpredictability in the final third.
That’s what Rak-Sakyi offers, with the winger known to have been on Southampton’s radar in the past.
He should be available after a loan at Sheffield United last season, with the 22-year-old down the pecking order at Crystal Palace.
Rak-Sakyi’s pace and close control makes him a threat, and he is the sort of player that Still can improve with his coaching and man-management skills.
