Manchester City are planning a big summer bid to land Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.
City are preparing for a major rebuild in the summer window following the club’s disappointing domestic campaign. Currently 17 points from the top of the Premier League and out of Europe, plans are underway for an overhaul of an ageing squad.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Wirtz is a player on the club’s radar. The 21-year-old was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023/24 after inspiring Leverkusen to a maiden German title success and unbeaten domestic double.
This season, Wirtz has continued to impress, with 26 goals and assists in 27 starts across the Bundesliga and Champions League.
City are keen to beat competition from clubs including Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to land the midfielder, who is viewed as the top option for the club’s number 10 role.
Bayern are particularly keen and have expressed public interest. However, there is doubt from the Bavarians that Leverkusen would sell to a domestic rival.
“We want to sign Florian Wirtz,” former Bayern president Uli Hoeness said to BILD.
“There are three parties involved… he still has a long-term contract in Leverkusen. I see the chances at 10%.”
Manchester City are hopeful of winning the race. The Blues are braced for the exit of Kevin De Bruyne in the summer as the midfielder nears the end of his deal, while Bernardo Silva (30), Ilkay Gundogan (34), Jack Grealish (29) and Mateo Kovacic (30) could all move on.
Leverkusen are reluctant to lose Wirtz, who is contracted at the BayArena until 2028. He is valued in excess of €120m (£100m) by the German champions.
