It has been three years since Joan Laporta returned as the president of FC Barcelona and safe to say that the tenure has been eventful.

Now, Laporta’s current term as president will come to an end in 2026 when fresh presidential elections will be held.

As has already been reported, the 61-year-old intends to run for the club presidency again and is already planning his electoral campaign for 2026.

Julian Alvarez of Manchester City a target

Indeed, as per SPORT, Joan Laporta wants to bring in a big-name signing as part of his electoral campaign to be re-elected as the president of FC Barcelona.

To that end, Julian Alvarez of Manchester City has emerged as an option that the sports commission is looking at.

The 24-year-old Argentine forward is well-admired at Barcelona and those at the club believe that he would fit their project like a glove.

However, since Alvarez has a contract with Man City until 2026, the Catalans would have to enter into negotiations with the Premier League champions over his signing.

Furthermore, any move for the 2022 World Cup winner would require Barcelona to have returned to some sort of economic stability by that time.

Alvarez has been linked in the past

It must be noted that this is not the first time that Barcelona have been linked with Julian Alvarez.

Indeed, the Argentine centre-forward had been touted as a target last summer as well while former manager Xavi Hernandez saw him as an ideal option for the future to take over from current striker Robert Lewandowski.

Any move for Alvarez this summer is out of the question, but the forward features in the current sports commission’s roadmap for the medium-term future as Laporta plans to return for another term as Barcelona president.
