Both Mainz 05 and Union Berlin have been fined by the DFB for their use of pyrotechnics during the season.

Mainz’s fine comes from their 3-0 win against VfB Lübeck in the DFB Pokal second round back in October. The DFB say Mainz burned 20 Bengali fireworks and this resulted in a €20,000 fine for the club. Up to €6600 of this fine can be invested in security and infrastructural measures.

Union Berlin’s fine comes from their 6-1 win away at Schalke right at the start of the season. The DFB claim that Union fans set off 17 Benagli fireworks and other smoke contraptions. The fine for Union is €17,000 with no investments allowed.

Both Mainz and Union Berlin have accepted the fine.

This season Mainz find themselves in midtable having ended the year in poor form before the World Cup break. Union Berlin after a very strong start to the season, where they found themselves first, now sit fifth after they endured poor form before the break losing to both Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg.
