Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has decided that the team’s penalty taker would be appointed on match day and before kick-off, according to a report from Le Parisien. The outlet understands it is a symbolic gesture aimed at keeping his players under pressure and building a collective spirit where every player is on equal footing. “The club, PSG, is the leader“, Luis Enrique notably said in a preseason press conference.

Controversies regarding the identity of PSG’s undisputed penalty taker – or “Penaltygates” – were quite common when Neymar (32) and Kylian Mbappé (25) played together for Les Parisiens. The France captain was the undisputed penalty taker last season. At Le Havre, for PSG’s campaign-opening 4-1 away win, centre-forward Randal Kolo Muani (25) took charge of a penalty kick, which reportedly created confusion with midfielder Vitinha (24) and Ousmane Dembélé (27), despite Kolo Muani scoring his attempt.

The outlet adds that this penalty policy could contribute to Luis Enrique’s design of having at least four of his players hit double figures and, therefore, compensate for the loss of Mbappé.
