San Diego FC is piecing in its first-ever MLS season, and the latest might be one of the most strategic moves made by the team to date. Luca de la Torre, an artistic international midfielder, arrives on loan from Celta Vigo until the end of the 2025 season with the option to buy. This transfer isn't only a boost to the club, but also to the player himself and the USMNT.
The 26-year-old, born in San Diego, returns to his roots, carrying with him almost a decade of experience in European leagues. Fulham, Heracles, and Celta Vigo have formed the bedrock of his professional growth, and his sojourn in the USMNT has sealed his reputation as a technically gifted, versatile midfielder who possesses great acumen for the game.
For sporting director Tyler Heaps, bringing Luca back is far more than just a roster move. "Bringing Luca home to San Diego is special. He's not only competed in some of the world's top leagues, but also represents the city that shaped him as a player and a person," Heaps said.
On the pitch, De la Torre is supposed to be the brain of San Diego FC's midfield. The way he controls the rhythm of the game, gives perfect passes, and recovers the ball makes him a very important piece for a team that's taking shape fast. Head coach Mikey Varas will need him as an important element in establishing his style of play in the MLS.
De la Torre brings an added creative layer to the midfield of San Diego, who are also flush with more experienced players like Aníbal Godoy and promising talents such as Alejandro Alvarado Jr. In that regard, there's a good mix of youth and experience, but his presence could also act as a catalyst in helping younger players grow.
The move to MLS may also be the turning point that De la Torre needs for his international career. At Celta Vigo, he was usually used from the bench, which seriously limited his time on the field and, of course, growth. Now, with San Diego FC, he finally has the chance to show he is a full-time starter, playing on a regular basis and raising his bar.
This should be great news for the USMNT, who now run the risk of having a fully fit and in-form De la Torre. More minutes on the field normally means better rhythm and confidence, which can then easily lead to even better performances with the national team.
Besides De la Torre, San Diego FC has already invested in other high-profile names for its MLS debut, including Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, an internationally recognized star. The mix of emerging talent and veterans is a sign of the club's commitment to competing at the top level from day one.
Building this roster is a clear strategy to create an identity for the club. Bringing back a local player like De la Torre not only strengthens the team but also forges a direct connection with the San Diego community. This is crucial for engaging fans and establishing a solid base of support in a league that's constantly growing.
