There is a void to be filled in the France national team. Controversially, Kylian Mbappé has not joined Les Bleus in Clairefontaine for the upcoming international break. With Antoine Griezmann also announcing his retirement from international football, France are without a captain and a vice-captain for this current international break, with matches against Israel and Belgium coming up in the UEFA Nations League. Whoever inherits the armband will only do so temporarily, but it may provide an indication as to who will inherit the role of vice-captain, previously held by Griezmann.

Konaté names France captain candidates

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté (25), who despite being selected in Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2024 played no part in Germany, has thrown his name into the hat. “Being a leader is something that is innate. You either have it or you don’t,” began Konaté in a press conference, transcribed by Get French Football News.

“You have to be someone that everyone likes. A leader has to be there especially when things aren’t going well. It’s like the foundations of a house; he holds up the group so that everything can go well. Some players have the profile. I have two or three names: Mike (Maignan), myself, Jules (Koundé) and Aurél(ien Tchouaméni). Those are the only names that come to mind,” added Konaté.
