Anfield prepares for an early-season blockbuster on Sunday as reigning champions Liverpool host last season’s runners-up Arsenal in a clash already dripping with title-race significance.

This is the earliest the previous season’s top two have met in a Premier League campaign since 2017. Both clubs have made strong starts and know that victory here could provide a vital psychological edge.

This fixture is historically one of the Premier League’s most high-scoring encounters, with the last six meetings at Anfield producing a remarkable 29 goals. However, Arsenal have struggled on Merseyside, and are winless in their last 12 league visits, a run stretching back to 2012 when Mikel Arteta was in the Gunners’ midfield.

Team News

Liverpool

Arne Slot has a near fully-fit squad to choose from. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is back in training and expected to be available after missing last week’s win at Newcastle.

The Reds’ only confirmed absentee is right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who is out with a hamstring injury. Dominik Szoboszlai, who started against Newcastle United, is the most likely candidate to deputise in his place.

Arsenal

In stark contrast, Mikel Arteta is contending with a major injury crisis. Influential attackers Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz have both been ruled out for a number of weeks. Captain Martin Ødegaard is also very unlikely to play after picking up a shoulder problem. Ben White and Leandro Trossard face late fitness tests. New signing Eberechi Eze is expected to make his full debut.

Form

Liverpool

Liverpool have won both their opening league games, but have shown defensive vulnerabilities in 4-2 and 3-2 victories. However, their attack is in formidable form. A single goal on Sunday will set a new club record for scoring in consecutive top-flight matches (37).

Arsenal

The Gunners have made a perfect start, winning their opening two games without conceding a goal. Dominant victories over Manchester United and Leeds have shown their resilience, but this trip to Anfield will be the ultimate test of their title credentials.

Predicted Lineups

Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konaté, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Arsenal predicted XI: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Eze, Zubimendi, Rice; Madueke, Gyökeres, Martinelli.
