Liverpool Face Defensive Dilemma Ahead of Newcastle United Clash

Liverpool travel to St James’ Park tonight for a pivotal Premier League fixture as Arne Slot’s champions aim to make it two wins from two. After their opening-day 4-2 triumph over Bournemouth, attention turns to how Slot manages an early injury setback and keeps momentum alive.

The headline concern is the absence of Jeremie Frimpong. The summer signing limped off against Bournemouth with a hamstring problem and has been ruled out of this match. For Slot, it is a significant challenge so early in the season.

Right-Back Options Under Consideration

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Slot acknowledged the difficulties in filling the gap at right-back:

“So, there are other options we can explore. Joe Gomez is definitely one of them, but for him to play already 20 minutes, that was already quite a lot,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say he had a setback but he wasn’t able to train three days in a row completely with the team. Which is completely normal if you’re out for so long and all of a sudden the manager needs you for 20 minutes. But he is training with the team, so let’s see where he is on Monday, if he can be involved in the team or if he can even start.”

Conor Bradley is also back in training, but both players lack sharpness after disrupted pre-seasons. This could prompt Slot to turn to unconventional solutions. Wataru Endo has been mentioned as a possible candidate to slot in at right-back, while Dominik Szoboszlai could be considered if tactical demands allow.

Midfield Dynamics and Key Changes

If Endo steps into defence, the midfield reshuffle could see Ryan Gravenberch return from suspension to join Alexis Mac Allister in a central role. Szoboszlai may then revert to a more advanced position, offering creativity against Newcastle’s physical approach.

This adjustment could leave Florian Wirtz on the bench despite his high-profile arrival, illustrating the depth and competition in Liverpool’s squad. The front three is expected to remain unchanged, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo supporting Hugo Ekitike, who will be eager to continue his strong start after scoring on debut.

Predicted Liverpool Line-Up

Alisson; Endo, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Kick-off is at 8pm BST on Monday, August 25, live on Sky Sports. With Newcastle searching for a statement result and Liverpool keen to build on their winning start, this promises to be a high-intensity encounter.
